First days in Kazakhstan

Tuesday, June 18, 2024

A short time cycling to the border of Kazakhstan, we did a border crossing on bike to be greeted to Kazah culture. Our first day was planned to cycle away from the busy highway, and find an old village road that would connect us back to the road to Almaty.

After a small village of horse herders, we were amazed how friendly the Kazakh people were. We tried to use Diesel for our multifuel stove but we could't get it to light, which we would normally use Petrol. A cold bread & cheese before a late wakeup the next day.

We woke up & hit the road, meeting a friendly Kazakh couple on the road & then waited for us in the nearby village. They were very confused why we were cycling this way as this old road is impassable with the car. Concerned for us, they welcomed us into their home for breakfast & coffee. Delicious food & a very welcoming family who have lived in this village for 40 years, in where somehow we translated our problem with the diesel. Success!! they had some petrol so we could cook again.

They were increasingly concerned we wanted to follow this road but we wanted to push on to undiscovered routes. We ventured into the gravel & soon found lush green plains. Small pocket valleys with steep paths so a fair amount of hike a bike.

Getting to the top, we were greeted to cotton farms & pastures. Small dirt roads lead us to a small village, which they had a fridge full of delicious beverages & biscuits. Jaydens tubless popped & with some repairs mishaps. A tube in, we enjoyed the 600 meters of fast downhill covering the same distance we did in the first 6 hours of the day, in 1 hour. we found a small lake for our spot of the night.
